HARRY BARKER THROUGH THE AGES - HARDLY CHANGED AT ALL

In 1937 “Bulldog” Hawking described Harry Barker as a handy man who builds wooden models and can build a house; he is the wise old man of the staff having been born in Leeds many, many years ago when the world was in quite a primitive stateIn fact Harry had served in the trenches before teaching Crafts at Norden's Cockburn High School, Leeds. When Norden brought him down to Hove in 1936, Harry started a Hobbies Club, built the staff platform in the assembly hall as well as the Lectern, the Library reading desk, and showcases for the House Cups. He first arrived on a motorcycle in 1939 (model not named). When the Air Defence Cadet Corps was founded by Tabby that year, Harry became engineering instructor (Spike Reynolds taught Morse Code).

All this culled from school magazines by Bill Brock.
